Using the 4 C’s of Communication to Navigate Uncertainty

In times of economic uncertainty, it’s only natural for employees to worry about their positions and company status.  The way that employers react to these concerns will stick with the employee long after the time of crisis has passed.

What are some ways that leaders can manage in times of chaos? An easy way to remember this is the 4 C’s of communication!

Clarity

  • Share information as soon as you can to alleviate any gossip or surprises
  • If a restructuring or other transitions are happening, clearly define roles, goals and expectations to eliminate any confusion
  • Combat any rumors head on and provide facture information

Consistency

  • Create a schedule to give consistent updates and stick to it
    • A quick check-in can go a long way

Context

  • Provide context, including who, what, why, when and how
  • Create a safe environment for employees to ask questions and encourage two-way communication
    • Be sure to act on the feedback and follow up with this about what action is being taken

Compassion

  • Be available for conversations and offer support when possible
  • If your company has an employee assistance plan, make sure all employees know how to access
    • If not, consider promoting mental health services, stress management workshops, or tips for managing work-life balance
  • Recognize employee effort, which can boost morale

By incorporating the 4 C’s of communication, your employees will experience less anxiety in an already uncertain time.
