What Are Your Strengths? How to Answer in an Interview

What are your strengths? It’s a common interview question that can stop many candidates in their tracks. Crafting an answer that is both self-perceptive and will make an impression on the interviewer requires some work. Although getting the right response may not be easy, it’s not out of reach. You can get started by following these four steps.

Make a list

Jot down all your strengths, including the ones that are not work-related. With a list on hand, you’ll be able to sort through and strategize your response. Your list should contain anything that is a positive personality quality as well as talents, soft skills, training, certifications, and your experience in various areas. You can also ask close friends and family what they think your strengths are. Not only will this allow you to learn how you are perceived by others, you might be surprised by their responses.

Narrow it down

Strategize how you want to market yourself. Observe what the company is looking for from the job description and prior research. Take time to analyze each item on your list and determine which is relevant, then narrow it down to the strengths that fit. Choose skills, personality qualities, talents, and experiences that will allow you to stand out. These should correlate to success in performing the job and show that you’re right for the company and team.

Attach your experience

Demonstrate that you possess these strengths by tying one or two examples to each. Focus on your ideas or actions that brought on results. With your handful of strengths and experiences to choose from, you can use it as an opportunity to discuss anything that you may not have previously touched on in the interview.

Review and practice

Now that you have that all down, don’t forget to practice delivering it. Your presentation is important since you’ll need to show confidence without bordering on overconfidence. Try to be comfortable talking about your own skills and don’t hesitate. You’re aiming to sell yourself as the right candidate and you want the interviewer to be confident in your abilities as well.

Understanding how to effectively answer, “What are your strengths?” can significantly impact your success in interviews. By following the steps we’ve outlined, you can confidently answer this common interview question and stand out to potential employers.
