More technology professionals are looking for jobs, according to new research by Indeed. It also noted compensation and benefits — such as sign-on bonuses and stock options — are a priority in their searches.
Indeed’s data shows the number of technology professional looking for jobs has increased by 86% since January 2020. The growth rose to 3.34 million in August 2024 from 1.79 million per month in January 2020. However, tech pros with five to 10 years of experience are more likely to apply for internal roles than outside their current company.
A greater percentage of workers, 61%, found roles on their own this year rather than relying on recruiters and personal networks, according to the company. Last year, 55% found new jobs on their own.
Benefits are a top priority for tech workers when it comes to looking at jobs, with 69% citing this as the case, according to Indeed. Benefits tech workers found most valuable are sign-on bonuses, four-day work weeks, unlimited PTO, à la carte benefits (choosing from a variety of benefits) and stock options/equity.
Compensation ranked No. 2 in terms of what tech workers seek in new job opportunities, cited by 67%. Jobs that list compensation see 31% higher apply rates, according to Indeed. Still, less than 50% of tech job postings on its website list salary details — it was 46% for software roles and 42% for IT roles.
Indeed’s research is based on a survey of more than 1,100 US-based technology professionals between June 4 and June 24. The respondents represent a range of tougher-to-fill technology roles and experience levels. Additional insights were gathered from Indeed and Glassdoor data.
